English major is a key discipline, a Brand Specialty and an Experiment Reform Construction Unit in our university. In order to meet the demands of the socialist marketing economy, the undergraduate program is committed to our students’ all-round development, training them to possess a solid foundation of English language, a wide scope of knowledge, humanistic quality, proficient language skills and independent working ability. This program attaches great importance to students’ ability of language application and cultural communication, which enables our graduates to be engaged in teaching, researching, translating, interpreting, as well as management in the fields of education, scientific research, culture, foreign affairs, business, tourism, and foreign-related hotels. For freshmen and sophomores, the program highlights the basic training for the enhancement of students’ comprehensive abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing; for juniors and seniors, it focuses on the more specialized enhancement in two orientations, namely, English Language and Literature and Business English.
Major courses for English language and Literature program include Advanced English, English Speaking, Listening and Viewing, Translation Theory and Practice, An Introduction to English Linguistics, the History of British and American Literature, Selected Reading for British and American Literature, and Contrast between English and Chinese.
Business-oriented English courses include Cross-culture Business Communication, Business Negotiation, International Marketing (bilingual), Tourism English, International Business Administration, Business English Writing, Practice of International Trade, and International Business Spoken English.
